So Guess Who Was Voted Most Likely to Break a Hip?

Today I went to a different Zumba class than I usually do.  I admit it, I haven’t been to a workout in over two weeks.  When my morning was kinda open, I thought I better take the op even if it wasn’t the class I know and love.

I went to the class run by De Lisa and I have earlier described her class as quite different than Heather’s and (now Heather’s replacement)  Nitro’s. Well, let’s just say the *less intense* crowd has found her and it’s probably a good match.

I was feeling pretty smug signing in on the sign-up sheet right after Clara, Bernice, and Evelyn (and I assure you, I am not making up any names).  I was feeling pretty peppy and hip and young again for once lately when I looked around the room.  I couldn’t help it!  My brain just automatically went to, “Watch out, ladies.” I was gonna show these girls how to dance.

And so I did.  I stretched my legs out longer.  I kicked higher.  I lunged lower.  I moved fast, faster than De Lisa.  I was feeling like Queen of my dance floor corner…

Until that moment when I skidded in some sweat and felt my shoe sliding right out from under me.  I tried to stop the descent.  I caught the floor first with the heel of my right palm but only a millisecond before before my whole body thudded and I was lying right splat down on the floor.

Yeah, real smooth move.

Delisa, Clara, Bernice, Evelyn and all the others turned and looked at me.  Judging from the raised eyebrows and mouths open in shock, I think I probably did make an impression with my dance.

MusicMonday—On Tuesday Because It’s What’s Been in my Head All Day

I went to bed last night with a song in my head and I thought I was just gonna have to get back up and play it on the iPod so I could get over it.  But no, sleep actually came quickly as it does with me, at least at the start of the night, and that one drifted out and I woke up with a different one in its place.  Probably because our alarm in the morning is the radio going off at 5 am and I heard it first thing.  It’s such a great song, I was glad I was singing it all day today.  Far far better than the one I woke up to yesterday that thoroughly stinks imo, and to top it, I even heard it a second time in the afternoon on a different station.  Today was a much better music day because it was this most perfect tune:

From 1997, The Colour and the Shape album

[The actual official video is a goofy fun Foo one like they usually are, here’s a link, but I feel like it kinda takes away from the beauty of the song to watch it so that’s why I picked this non-video video.]

Most Recent Melt A Mom’s Heart

It happened today as we were traveling in the car.

And you have to read this with Sam’s voice having absolutely no expression, just complete matter-of-fact.

Caroline:  I wish I knew what it’s like to have a sister.  Sam, what is it like?

Sam:  It’s ok.

Caroline:  Is it like having a girl come over for a play date?

Sam:  No, but it’s like having a friend forever.

Soon Back to a Whole Family Unit

Gary just commented yesterday that he’s almost forgotten what it’s like to have kids in the house.  Jack’s been here, of course, but he doesn’t seem much like a kid.  Plus he spends 30 hours a day at high school, between having two classes and band, so yeah, he’s pretty quiet.

I expect the young uns will be coming home today.  They’ve had two weeks at Aunt Camp.  First, Aunt Karen’s and now Aunt Debra’s.  Lucky kids!

Gotta say, I’ve kinda missed their goofiness.

We’ve missed Caroline’s kitchen concoctions!

Did you know, when you don’t want your picture taken, you can just shut your eyes?  And your mom takes your pic anyway because she’s proud of you and can’t not take your picture?

And sometimes your parents have to close their eyes because there’s so much love inside their heart coming out for you.

Flat Tire Tuesday

Yesterday was a day to remember.  Well, parts of it would be great to forget, but the other parts were good.

I woke up early but then fell back to sleep and didn’t get up until 8 a.m.  Good.

I tried to take care of printing and filling out some forms and our country Internet can just drive me crazy sometimes and I didn’t get that job fully done.  Forget.  Until today when I have to try it again.

I went out to mow the pasture and edges of the yard and I love mowing so…  Good.

I quickly became covered from head to toe with gritty dust and dry plant stuff from a way too dry summer.  Forget.

Showers can feel extra good at times.  Good.

I quickly ran a comb through my sopping wet hair and threw on a little skimpy sundress because all I had to do was get Jack picked up in like 13 minutes from summer school.  Neutral.

I got to the QT intersection in town and my van suddenly acted weird and would barely go and I thought maybe my transmission was dropping out or a belt was off or something.  Forget.

I was able to pull over into the empty, old DoIt Center parking lot and got out to see I had a totally flat tire, I mean down to the rim flat.  Forget.

I quickly called another mom I knew would be at pick up and told her where I was and asked if she would please pick up Jack for me.  She said sure.  Good.

I fiddled around in the van trying to figure out how to get the jack out and I talked to Gary at work who told me to get the van jacked asap or the tire would be ruined.  And I still was having trouble with the jack so I got out my manual.  And this reminded me of how last week Gary had a tire going down on the car and we discussed about how I should do a practice tire changing just in case I needed to on my own someday and then I internally cursed that whole jinxing conversation.  Forget.

My friend Joanne pulled up in her van with Jack and her son, and she had a little air compressor thingy for us to try.  It was kinda a comedy of errors with us figuring that thing out—start the van, plug it into the lighter thing, no, turn off the van, well, not completely, leave the key on to accessories.  Why isn’t the gauge showing any pressure?  Is this thing even making any air?  Take it off and put it back on again.  Ok, what is going on?  Let’s look at the instructions. Good, I guess because I wasn’t stranded alone and there definitely is some humor in watching two ladies trying to do something automotive when they don’t have a clue.

I notice a little weed blowing around like crazy on the pavement by the flat tire.  I put my hand up to it and yep, tons of air is moving through a hole in the sidewall of the tire.  Good, because this verifies the air compressor thing is working.  Forget, because I have a severely damaged tire.

A policeman pulls up and asks if I need any help and jumps right in to undo the lug nuts.  Good.

He can not get the lug nuts to budge and actually bent the tire tool trying.  I tell him that my husband rotates the tires himself because he can’t stand when the places use impact wrenches and get them on so tight, so he should be able to get them right off.  I think I insulted his officerly manhood.  He tells me to go across the street to the body shop for help.  I tell him that actually we deal with Dobb’s for tires and I will call them.  I think I insulted his officerly advice.  I get on my phone to Dobb’s and the officer abruptly leaves, without me saying thank you, bye, here’s another insult, nothing.  Forget.

Dobb’s is just a block away and says they’ll send someone right over.  He is an easy-going smiley younger guy that jumps right into the situation, seeming happy to help.  He takes over everything, pulling out his own real tire iron and cheater bar and finally gets those lug nuts off.  Good

Since then, I remember I had work done at the Honda Dealership not long ago and that explains the ultra-tight lug nuts and yeah, sorry, Officer.  Forget.

The tire guy has me suited up with the spare lickety-split and my friend has still been waiting around with me this whole time so she follows me to the tire place where I find out they will work on the tire this afternoon.  I offer everybody a Mexican lunch (now it’s 2 o’clock) and we do it.  Through all this I have been self-conscious about what I’m wearing because remember I was only planning on staying in the van to pick up Jack, a la skimpy dress.  Nevertheless, I go into the public restaurant and enjoy a burrito and the company of Jack, still in a surprisingly good mood, and our friends. Good.

Joanne drives us home and I immediately crashed on the bed, probably a stress-induced nap as I see it.  I wake up and by then it’s time to drive Jack into town for band practice.  Luckily we have a third vehicle sitting around, the truck, so no prob. Good.

I manage to kill the truck, stick-shift you know, at the intersection leaving the neighborhood while the old man who lives right there watches the truck rolling backwards as I try to get it under control.  I restart the truck and make a run for it up the incline and tell Jack we just won’t stop at the stop  sign.  And we do fine and are on our way.  Good.

I get him dropped off at high school and head over to the carwash because as mentioned, it’s dusty around here and Gary’s truck has been sitting undriven for who knows how long, and my leftover toll change from the Chicago trip on the weekend was right there in my purse.  I even drive to Dierberg’s for some groceries and make it back home without one other instance of killing it.  Plus, now the truck is looking shiny.  Well, as shiny as that old paint can look.  Good.

Gary’s already home from work so I make him a quick sandwich and right then Dave pulls in with a scout trailer to park and we chat for a bit with him and his wife and then I ask what time it is and it’s just a few minutes from 6:30, the time I was supposed to pick up the van with fixed tire so we rush off.  The tire place says my total is “Two-fifty” and I about have a cow because one tire?!  Then I sheepishly ask, “You mean two dollars and fifty cents?” And they say yeah.  The tire was not repairable but less than a year old with some hazard warranty for a free replacement so the $2.50 state of Illinois fee was the only charge.  Good. Good. Good.  (I might add to the goodness that the warranty would have been up on July 25 so if I had to have a ruined tire this was the time.)

I made it on time to the band parents’ meeting at the high school at 7 pm.  I came out of the band meeting at 8, looking for Jack and became really worried when I couldn’t find him in the parking lot, the band room, no where.  Almost all the ~150 kids had cleared out and been picked up when I saw the same friend of Jack’s who had been part of the Mom-Son rescue team earlier and asked him in a mini-panic, “Do you know where Jack is?!”  And he said, “Well, didn’t he go to the swim test?” and I felt like the biggest doofus in the world since I am the one that made that arrangement for Gary to pick up Jack from band practice at 7:30 for his swim test and had confirmed with Gary just an hour ago on that plan.  Forget.

I headed over to the Y to see if Jack was done and he and Gary were walking out right then.  Jack passed.  We all headed home and I put on my pj’s, made a sandwich as my supper, and started to watch something with Gary and promptly fell asleep on the couch just over fourteen hours from when my day had started.  Good, except the couch part.

The main lesson I learned from my day is to be super grateful for your working cell phone and good friends and strangers and good businesses who are there to help you get through a Flat Tire Day.

And don’t forget the Mexican food.

To all, I say “gracias.”

MusicMonday—The Celestials

Yesterday was a great Sunday.  Let me list the ways:

Woke up, on my own, to the long-missed sound of gentle thunder

Was in a comfy bed at Debra’s, and can I just say, what a homey home she has

Ate a delicious breakfast cooked for me by said hostess which was toast and eggs and strawberries and cherries and Nutella…perfect

Took a wonderful just-right warm shower and dressed in my comfiest/favorite outfit: burnout t-shirt, shorts, sandals, and topped with a fun new beaded yard sale necklace

Drove through a cool neighborhood in Crete, gawking at all the beautiful and, key word -->unique homes with lush, shaded yards

Picked up an Aurelio’s pizza, frozen, that Deb had ordered for Gary and Jack, and bonus!, Aurelio’s provided the insulated carrier free of charge and I didn’t have to buy a cooler that would accommodate a 16-inch pizza

Left my three charming youngest children at their awesome aunt’s for a 3-4 day stay

Drove to IKEA - Bolingbrook and spent the afternoon taking that all in which would include:

Looking at, while dreaming of all the ways to furnish a home with, their cool and reasonable stuff and that took me three and a half enjoyable hours

Picking up a few organizational pieces for purchase, which I view as a taking a baby step to maybe next time buying something kinda big, and then the next time, really big?

Knowing that future visits need to be in a truck or at least a mini-van

Eating Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries

Wondering why Chicagoland would have two IKEA’s in close proximity while St. Louis has none

Realizing Chicagoland *has* to have two because it was so flipping crowded, I can’t imagine if half the people didn’t go to the other one

Spending way too much time hemming and hawing about a particular rug for the kids’ area in the basement and then coming away with no rug at all but then realizing it was the right choice because it reminded me of a latch hook rug I made in 1978 and that means it looked a bit too yarn-y

Doubting on the drive home the decision to pass on the two outdoor chairs that were in the as-is area with no apparent blemish and at a deal of a price with an additional 20% off, and darn-tootin, they probably would have fit in the car backseat

Driving home on a beautiful summer evening listening to music and having a great time as I watched the sky getting cloudier and darker as I navigated south, giving hope I would come home to desperately needed rain (bummer part is: just an illusion, no rain)

Hearing this song on the radio for the first time and falling for it immediately

The Smashing Pumpkins from new 2012 album Oceania

Being reminded of the whirlwind-in-love days and nights that Gary and I played Smashing Pumpkins cd’s during our courtship and newlywed days of the 90’s

Coming home to hug my almost-birthday boy and freshly scrubbed, shaved, and sweet smelling hubby

What a great day!

Fun Time in Bed

I had a lucid dream this morning and just have to share.

I had taken the kids to see some natural landmark, but wasn’t sure where to park.  There was bare ground all around with a river flowing ahead of us.  I pulled up to the edge of the river and decided that would be a good spot.  As we got out and gathered up our backpacks and stuff from the trunk, I noticed the front tires had sunk forward quite a bit into the soft mud.  I worried that if this happened in just the five minutes we’d been sitting there, the van might be completely buried or gone after we came back from hiking this place.

I debated on how I would get the vehicle out to park it in a new spot, as two more cars had since pulled in next to and kind of behind us.   Never fear, Grant grabs the wheel to help as I’m giving the car gas to reverse slowly and gently to get through this very tight spot between cars.  Considering he is not experienced at driving at all, we smack right into the parked car and it’s immediately apparent from the jolt and the awful noise that we have done major damage.

I turn to look straight at him, seeing his eyes popping out of his head in fear and sheer panic over his face, and casually smile and say, “Aren’t we so glad this is just a dream?”  And then Grant exhales with relief and regains a calmness and we gun the gas and jerk the wheel and hit the parked car again.

Little Things Make Me Sooo Happy

At Lowes for a new battery and there's the Lowes' band playing.  (??, I know!)  I walk up and request some Chili Peppers, halfway as a joke, and they played the full Under the Bridge.  For me!

Now that's a 4th of July celebration!!

Root Canal

Root_Canal

Yesterday was my appointment for the dreaded root canal procedure.  I really didn’t know if it was the correct decision to go ahead with it or not, but in the end, I know now my decision was the right one.

One of my lower teeth, one right before the molars, started hurting while we were on vacation.  I thought it was so strange because I had just had my check-up and cleaning a week before that and there were no problems.  But after a few days of pain with it on the trip, I realized there was a big problem and had a dentist said he’d yank it, I would have probably came home from Arizona with one fewer teeth.

As soon as we got home, I called my dentist and she saw me the next day, but by then, it wasn’t hurting!  At all!?!   She identified the tooth as one that had had a major filling in 2010 and there was talk then of a root canal but it turned out it wasn’t needed.  She felt that the pressure of being at the high elevation caused the pain and there was some infection, so we scheduled a root canal for a month down the road.  She prescribed a round of yucky, yucky erythromycin and honestly, I felt nothing from the tooth through that whole month and really debated whether or not I should keep the appointment.  Gary was the one saying I should just get it done even if it wasn’t a problem right now.  It was funny that he was telling that to an arguing me because usually the roles are completely reversed.

I just couldn’t see having a dreaded procedure on something that wasn’t currently a concern. But then I thought, what if I got a chance again to go out West, like to Santa Fe!, and then what if I was miserable there, or anywhere with elevation, because I didn’t follow through with the dern thing?  I’d be pretty mad at me.

But each day as it got closer, I was doubting again if it was needed.  The appointment was on a Monday and since I hadn’t given them any warning about cancelling, I showed up.  I told the assistant and the dentist my doubts and asked if I should do it if I wasn’t having any pain, sensitivity, nothing.   They took an x-ray and then recommended that I go ahead with it.

So I did.

That was probably my best decision in all of 2012.  It was not painful, it was not long, it was nothing like I imagined a root canal would be given how people have talked about them and the reputation they have.

I still have to go back and get the crown on, but it was a breeze.  My PSA is:  If you need one, do it while you feel fine, before you are inflamed and in pain.  I can tell you, a root canal can really be no big deal.

What do I feel like giving Dr. Dunn, my super dentist?...A little plaque.

Haha.  And one more:

What did the dentist see at the North Pole?...A molar bear.

: )  : )  : )
